In the United Kingdom, most former Commonwealth countries and in Europe the term anesthetist refers only to physicians (university graduates in medicine) specialized in anaesthetics. In a very few UK hospitals some duties are performed by non-physicians, Physicians' Assistants (Anaesthesia), but only under physician anaesthetist supervision.
